Two-Day Standard First Aid Course

This program is designed to equip you with essential skills and confidence to respond effectively in emergencies. You will engage in a blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on training, covering vital topics such as CPR, wound care, and choking relief. Led by experienced instructors, this course ensures you gain practical knowledge through real-life scenarios. By the end, you'll earn a recognized certification and be empowered to make a difference in your community. 


Course Overview:


This two-day course is designed to equip participants with essential first aid knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively in emergency situations.


Course Content:


Day 1


Introduction to First Aid

Definition:

  - Roles and responsibilities of the first aider.

  

Prevention:

  - Possible measures to hinder accidents from occurring.


Preserve Life:

  - Importance of applying first aid timely.


Prevent Conditions from Getting Worse:

  - Discussing incorrect approaches to help the victim.

  - Group discussion on practices that could exacerbate injuries.


Identifying Hazards:

  - Highlighting common workplace hazards (seen hazards: fire, glass, snakes, scorpions, nails, heavy materials; unseen hazards: wet wires, electricity, empty roads, rocks, elevation risks/working at heights).

  - Accident evaluation video.


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

  - Importance and use of PPE (harness use in elevation, shoes, gloves, goggles).


Diseases and Transmission:

  - Understanding HIV, Hepatitis B and C.

  - Protection from COVID-19 and airborne disease transmission.


Use of Barriers:

  - Gloves, face masks/shields, CPR masks, BVM (if available).


Using Bystanders:

  - Tips on how to utilize the crowd for assistance.

  - Responsibilities (clearing danger, calling for help, obtaining a first aid kit, reassuring family, carrying the victim, notes taking, etc.).


Calling for Help:

  - Information to provide upon calling for help.

  - Local EMS numbers and tips for effective communication.


Physiology and Anatomy:

  - Overview of the respiratory system (lungs), circulatory system (heart), nervous system (brain), skeletal system (bones), and thoracic cavity (sucking wounds).


Checking for Response:

  - Assessing levels of alertness (alert, confused, reacts to pain, unconscious).


Responsive Casualty Management:

  - Primary survey (AB-CAB SSS).

  - Choking (infant, child, adult) — demonstration and activity.


Unresponsive Casualty Management:

  - Breathing assessment and recovery position (activity).

  - Non-breathing: resuscitation for infants, children, and adults.

  - One-man and two-man CPR with trainer AED.

  - Group coordinated CPR with trainer AED.

  - Introduction to AED (if available).

  - Practice scenario activities led by instructor and participants.


Shock Management:

  - Definition and understanding of shock (activity).


Severe Bleeding:

  - Direct pressure and pressure bandages, use of surrounding materials for assistance, management of amputations (tourniquet), embedded objects, and open chest wounds (demonstration and activity).


Dressings and Bandages:

  - Application techniques for head, arms, legs, chest, fingers (activity).


Minor Bleeding and Wound Care:

  - Cleaning wounds and infection analysis (activity).


Electrical Shock and Injuries:

  - Identifying dangers, safety measures, and transportation (group activity).


Chest Injuries:

  - Identifying and evaluating open chest wounds (bandaging techniques, special transport rules, demonstration, and class activity).


Day 2


Head and Spinal Injuries:

  - Importance of spinal injury awareness, suspecting spinal injury, cervical collar use, securing the neck, immobilizing the body, and transport techniques.


Bone and Joint Injuries:

  - Types of fractures (wrist, arm, collarbone, shoulder, rib, pelvis, leg, muscle strain), importance of circulation, checking circulation, use of triangular bandage, and splinting (group activity).


Snake Bites:

  - General information, snakes in Laos, bandaging, and transportation (group activity).


Dog Bites:

  - Identifying sick dogs, importance of rabies vaccination, bandaging, and activity.


Fire Safety:

  - General rules (e.g., not entering burning buildings), smoke hazards, and fire extinguisher introduction (demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher).


Burns:

  - Understanding first, second, and third-degree burns, initial treatment, and secondary treatment (activity).


Eye Injuries:

  - Bandaging techniques and proper washing techniques (activity).


Seizures:

  - General information, clarifying myths, and how to help.


Heat Emergencies and Heatstroke:

  - Identification and swift treatment.


Rescue Carries:

  - Techniques including drag carry, chair carry, pick-a-pack, cradle carry, human crutch, blanket carry, two-hand seat, four-hand seat, extremities carry, and back carry.


Scenario Practice:

- Two simulated patients in the field with multiple injuries and hazards. Participants will apply their knowledge and skills to assist.

- Evaluation and question-and-answer session.


Conclusion:

- Written test.

- General Q&A.

- Distribution of certifications.

- Group photo.
