Advance/ Wilderness First Aid

The Advanced First Aid Course is an intensive and comprehensive program that equips participants with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to respond to complex medical emergencies. Designed for individuals in high-risk environments, including wilderness settings, the course focuses on managing injuries and emergencies until professional medical help arrives. Participants will gain expertise in assessing and treating various injuries, including spinal injuries, head trauma, severe burns, as well as managing airway and breathing obstructions. The course also emphasizes communication, teamwork, and ethical considerations in emergency care.


Course Duration

Approximately 3-4 days, depending on the participants' prior knowledge of first aid.

Definition

  - Roles and Responsibilities of the First Aider


Prevention

  - Measures to hinder accidents from happening


Preserve Life

  - Importance of timely first aid application


Prevent Conditions from Getting Worse

  - Incorrect approaches to helping victims

  - Group discussion on incorrect practices leading to further injury


Identifying Hazards

  - Common (fire, glass, snakes, scorpions, nails, heavy materials)

  - Unseen (wet wires, electricity, traffic, rocks, elevation risks, underground mining risks)

  - Accident evaluation video


PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

  - Importance of PPE, including proper use of harnesses, shoes, gloves, and goggles


Disease and Transmission

  - HIV, Hepatitis B and C

  - Protection from airborne and blood-borne diseases


Use of Barriers

  - Gloves, face masks/shields, CPR masks, BVM if available


Utilizing Bystanders

  - Strategies to enlist help from the crowd

  - Reassuring family, clearing danger, calling for help, managing victim's personal belongings, etc.


Calling for Help

  - Information to provide when calling for help

  - Local EMS numbers and tips for effective communication

    -Respiratory System: Involved in breathing and oxygen exchange.

    - Circulatory System: Transports blood and nutrients.

    - Nervous System: Controls bodily responses; importance in injury assessment.

    - Skeletal System: Provides structural support and protects organs; significance in fractures.


Casualty Management


Checking for Response

  - Methods for assessing alertness and responsiveness.


Responsive Casualty

  - Primary survey (AB-CAB SSS).

  - Techniques for choking (infant, child, adult).

  - Demonstration and activities.


Unresponsive Casualty

  - Breathing and Recovery Position (Activity).

  - Non-Breathing: Resuscitation techniques for infants, children, and adults.

  - One-man CPR, Two-men CPR, Group coordinated CPR with Trainer AED.

  - Use of AED and introduction to actual AED (if available).

  - Oxygen Use (If requested): Indications for oxygen use, delivery methods, and practical demonstrations.

  - CPR scenario demonstration activities (Instructor-led and participant-led).


Shock Management

  - Definition and understanding of shock.

  - Activity on shock identification.


Severe Bleeding

  - Techniques for controlling bleeding (direct pressure, pressure bandages).

  - Use of improvised materials for bandaging.

  - Management of amputations, embedded objects, and open chest wounds.

  - Demonstration and activity.


Dressings and Bandages

  - Applying dressings to various body parts (head, arms, legs, chest).

  - Activities for practical experience.


Minor Bleeding and Wound Care

  - Cleaning wounds and analyzing infection risks.

  - Activity on wound care.


Electrical Shock and Injuries

  - Identifying electrical dangers, safety measures.

  - Wound assessment and transportation considerations.

Chest Injuries

  - Identification and evaluation of chest wounds.
